Jon and Jenny Flanagan Visit (Weekend of September 20)

Our good friends Jon and Jenny came to visit from Colorado and we had a wonderful weekend.  We are so excited for them as they are expecting, and we look forward to welcoming their daughter to this big world sometime this fall/early winter.  On Friday, Steve and I took the day off and while Maddy was at school, and we joined Jon, Jenny and Eric Skaar on a fantastic hike at Eagle Creek to Punchbowl Falls.  It was a nice four mile hike and the weather was perfect.  It was nice to be outdoors. I have to say that I was happy Madeline was not on this hike, as some areas had such steep drop offs, I was a bit nervous.  If Maddy would have been there, I'd have been terrified!  It is an incredibly beautiful hike, though, as long as you take it slow.  After our hike we stopped at Double Mountain in Hood River, OR for a pint and some very yummy pizza.

Saturday Maddy and I had Swimming Lessons, the first of a six week session this fall.  We had lots of fun in the pool, and she's learning to become much more comfortable in the water.  It seems to be helping with washing her hair at bath time, too (quite a relief).  That evening we invited friends to our house for a BBQ, which is always a fun time.

Then came Sunday, which of course means FOOTBALL at the Faust House, more friends and more good food (breakfast goodies, since football starts at 10:00 a.m.).  It was Jon and Jenny's last day visiting and everyone had a great time.

Maddy just loved Jon (aka Floopy-doopy) and Jenny (aka Jenny-wenny) and will be talking about their visit for a long time.  Come back and visit again soon, Jon and Jenny!  You are welcome any time!!

Mommy/daughter weekend

This past weekend, Steve went on his "Dudes Backpacking Trip.". Our friend, Andy Madigan, flew in from Minneapolis to join the crew, and they headed out to the Mount St. Helen's area on Friday for a weekend of camping, hiking and camaraderie.  This gave me and Little Miss Maddy lots of bonding time.  : )

Friday night was pretty laid back, but we did eat dinner outside on the patio, which is always a special treat.  There were a few "I miss Daddy!" and "I want Daddy!" outbursts but it was to be expected. The girl loves her daddy!

Saturday morning we headed to the local library, both very excited for Story Time! Much to our dismay, Story Time was on break for 2 weeks. We still enjoyed our time there, playing with toys and puzzles and picking out new books!

We headed home and very soon thereafter, Christy and Luella came over for a play date! Andy was backpacking as well, so it was girl's weekend all around.  We played ball in the family room and had a fun time together.

And then it was nap time for Maddy which has turned into a struggle at the Faust House....I can get Maddy to lay down but once I leave there is no guaranty she'll stay in bed. She has the habit now of getting up, grabbing a book and "reading" in bed. I suppose there could be worse things, but Maddy's afternoon mood really is so much better if  she naps.  This nap time proved the same, only when I went in to check on her, I discovered a poop-tastrophy. I don't think anything more needs to be said about that.

After I cleaned up, Maddy and I took out the stroller and headed to the "Big Playground" about a mile away. There was a little kid birthday party in progress so lots of activity at the playground. Maddy had fun running around and playing on the swings.

After dinner Maddy and I watched one "Dora" (her absolute fav!) and called it a day.

Sunday morning we motivated early (I still don't know how Steve gets himself and Maddy ready and out the door with such efficiency every morning- I'm terrible at it!)  and headed out to run errands. When we got back, Steve and Andy had returned, and Maddy was one happy girl.

Nehalem Falls State Park Camping/Luella's Blessing: Sept 7, 2013

Luella Sweany's Baby Blessing

"Desiderata"
By Max Ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Jason performed the blessing for Luella after Andy welcomed all of us and read "Desiderata." Luella enjoyed the spoken portion of the blessing, but wasn't too keen on the water portion (pretty common, I believe! I'm glad we used a rose for Maddy's blessing!) ; )

Christy and Andy asked everyone to give some words of wisdom or a blessing to Luella.  Steve, Madeline and I gave Luella these passages to help guide her way.

When I came to birth I found the universe awaiting me.  Here it was with all its splendid and its awe-inspiring aspects.  Its beauty and its bounty, ready to give the new-born babe whatever s/he might be able to acquire with such measure of courage, strength, and wisdom as s/he could attain.
I had done nothing to prepare it for my advent and, when I emerged into conscious life from the unfathomed depths of mystery, I was under the necessity of taking it as I found it and of adjusting myself as rapidly as I was able to the terms which it imposed for my well-being.
The persons who took any notice of the arrival of another puny babe were few, but in my parents’ house there was rejoicing and, for their sakes, kinsfolk and friends showed an affectionate interest in the little child.  From the moment of my earliest cry I was surrounded with love which ministered to my needs, and with high ideals of life and faith to guide my growth in minds and spirit.
            These were my guardian angels.
From The Religion of an Inquiring Mind, Henry Wilder Foote

Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you.
Deep peace of the infinite peace to you.

We all spent the rest of the weekend enjoying the company of good friends and the peacefulness of the river.  We are very lucky to live near such beauty.

Before heading home on Sunday, Steve, Maddy and I went on a short hike on the Cape Falcon trail down to the ocean.  Maddy had an absolute blast running on the beach, flopping down and digging in the sand.  She definitely loves the ocean!

Summertime Fun: August 2013

We have been enjoying our summer immensely so I'll use this blog as a smorgasbord of sorts to memorialize some of the highlights.

We've been working on our new house as we go, one step at a time.  Maddy has a new decal on her wall and she loves the stars.  We love them too!  She also has a new little table in the living room where she can color and put stickers all over her arms, legs and wherever else she can get them to stick.

In August we made it to Sunset at the Zoo and saw Mr. Ben, whose songs are geared toward kids but remain adult-friendly too.  We brought a picnic dinner and had a very nice evening.

Maddy is so much fun!  Steve and I really try to enjoy every stage she's in, but I could never have imagined how much joy an almost 2 1/2 year old can be.  She's very imaginative and LOVES to pretend with her kitchen and her "friends" (stuffed animals).  Madeline makes us "Strawberry Soup".

Our dear friends Eric and Melissa Gregorich welcomed their daughter, Althea Grace to this world on August 21, 2013,  a bit earlier than expected.  She's doing well and growing strong!  We love her to pieces already and look forward to sharing many adventures with her and her wonderful family.

Our friends Jeff and Andrea were married August 24, 2013 and Steve was one of the groomsmen.  Maddy's little buddy Luella came to our house and Mandy and Jay watched both Maddy and Luella for the evening so that Christy, Andy, Steve and I could attend the wedding and festivities thereafter.  Thank you Mandy and Jay!

Congratulations Andrea and Jeff!

The next day we celebrated Riley's birthday at Wilson Pool, one of the best pools in the area.  There's a big pool just for little kiddos so it's lots of fun for Maddy and for us.  We had a great time!
